Dental crowns have a long history of use in treating a broad range of oral health issues. To learn more about the kinds of dental crowns we offer here at Isla Dental and how they can help you, read on.

Understanding Crowns

A dental crown is like a fancy hat for your tooth instead of your head. Actually, the name “crown” comes from the anatomical name for the exterior top part of the tooth. A dental crown is a restorative treatment designed to replace this exterior when something happens to it. Depending on the extent of the issue, a crown might cover all of a tooth’s outside, or just part of it.

Can a Crown Benefit You?

Dental crowns are so versatile that an exhaustive list of the conditions they can be used for would be too long to put here. The simple answer is that a crown can treat any kind of damage a tooth has suffered so long as it has not advanced to a more severe stage, such as eating away at the surrounding gums or underlying bone. Teeth that are fractured, infected, or even just overly sensitive can all benefit from having a crown placed.

Materials for Crowns

One of the most important aspects to consider when getting a crown is what material it should be made from. Many people choose composite resin because it is affordable, but it may not be the best long-term option. Crowns made from porcelain can cost more up-front, but may be a better choice overall because they are far more resistant to wear-and-tear. Porcelain also can better match the natural hue of your teeth, making it harder to notice that you have had any work done. Porcelain crowns come in two varieties - ones made entirely from porcelain, and ones with a metal core surrounded by porcelain. We recommend the former for your forward teeth as they reflect light most naturally, while metal core crowns for your back teeth can stand up to the chewing these teeth are expected to do.

Getting a Crown

Receiving your permanent, custom-fitted crown can take a little while, but the good news is that you can usually walk out of our office after a single appointment with a temporary crown that can immediately restore the majority of a tooth’s lost function. We may need to shape the damaged tooth so it can better support the crown, requiring local anesthesia. Fabricating your permanent crown can take several weeks, so when it is completed, we will ask you back to place it.
